Crowded schedule with the increase of T20 tournaments and games, players safety from injuries and burnouts, meaningless bi-lateral series is hurting Test cricket. To address these issues there have been calls for tier system from all corner of the globe. In my humble opinion that is not a feasible solution.
To make Test cricket more appealing and interesting all bi-lateral series must have some value. Otherwise the inevitable slow death of Test cricket is eminent. With Star players early retiring to increase their financial resources by playing the shortest version of the game is a direct threat to the quality of test cricket. With the number of games Intl players are playing, keeping them fit has become a challenge for each team.
One way to solve all these issue is a test championship format. With two divisions of teams playing home and away among the division rivals would produce two top teams. They the top team duel out in a neutral venue. To make it interesting, one may even have top four teams playing as semifinal format in neutral venues. I am sure the sponsors would not have any problem with this either.
The divisional setup should be done as geographical regions. For instance, two divisions of North and South. North would consist five teams of England, Bangladesh, Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka. South would have Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Zimbabwe and West Indies. Another option would be creating division as East-West. East would have Australia, New Zealand, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and India. Whereas, West would have Pakistan, South Africa, Zimbabwe, England, and West Indies. These divisions can solve many problems and issues.
1) Weak team can not improve without playing the stronger teams. Division system gives them a chance of doing that.
2) Each country do not have to play all 9 other test nations in a championship cycle. That would significantly reduce the number of test matches a country would play.
3) Superiority and inferiority complex can be eliminated. Australians, English do not want to play WI or Bangladesh. Now each match has value and points towards the championship.
4) Weak teams are divided just as strong teams. That would reduce the number of one sided games as well.
Outside the divisional play, teams can always schedule on their own and play each other. For instances, Australia-England can still have their own Ashes series if pit in different division. Ind-Pak can go at each other any time they want.
Any successful solution for test cricket is solely dependant on sporting pitches. Barren flat track is a turn off for everyone. ICC has to make sure of that. Bowlers are also cricket players. Give them something to play for.
Comparing this format with Tier system what ever is being proposed out there, one can only see a win-win situation for the good teams and the bad teams. Shutting out the good teams from playing the bad teams (that is what Tier system would do) would only increase the monopolistic hold of the stronger nations. Then the concept of global expansion of cricket would die instantly.
So Test championship with two divisions can be an alternative solution. This can also free up time slots for T20 to expand and make local leagues (IPL etc.) happy. Status quo will hurt test cricket as we all can realize.
